A FILM BY

ZAGO BROTHERS & FIAN BRASIL

Four giants of the food industry are here to save the day and make sure we get everything we need. But as it turns out, they are more indigestible than the stuff they are trying to push down our throats. As the characters Big Agro, Big Money, Big Tech, and Big Food come to light, we get a peek at their twisted inner workings to control the system.

This comic strip turned animation takes us through segments of big-scale food production and its consequences, from monoculture to loss of biodiversity, environmental destruction, displacement, misleading marketing, food manipulation, and more, culminating in a freakish musical presentation in an odd attempt to win over the public. But are we convinced? It becomes clear what these “heroes” are confabulating – and that it is up to us to demand change.

Directors’ Statement

There is a general unnerving feeling that there is something fundamentally wrong with the systems that currently govern our lives. In the case of food systems, corporate interests have changed our habits in terms of how we eat, what we eat and even what we think we want to eat. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of an industry that shoves its will down our throats, we feel paralyzed. We accept that we are powerless and unequipped to challenge or question the system. After all, we tell ourselves, that’s just the way it works.

When FIAN Brazil approached us to commission an animation on the corporate capture of food systems, we immediately saw the opportunity to address and dissect this complex issue using a visual language that we master.

We focused on the main players - Big Food, Big Money, Big Agro and Big Tech – and their corporate interests that rarely align with the needs of the people. The choice to personify these four giant industries brought our characters to life while showcasing the inner workings of this well-rehearsed quartet. The villains give us a glimpse of the world through their own perspective as they carry on their mischiefs believing in their own propaganda. For example, Big Agro is a hero! He gets rid of bugs and everything that gets in the way of a good crop and harvest, never mind the consequences. Big Food is another hero that puts a shine on every product and everything we could ever wish for, but is it still food? We use humor, topping it off with a musical number, to make a serious topic a bit more digestible.

We formed a formidable team that helped write, animate and compose in tight collaboration with FIAN Brazil, resulting in a piece we are proud of and hope will create an impact.

Directors’ Biography

Lucio and Nereo Zago are brothers who were born as Italian immigrants in Basel, Switzerland, where they both graduated from Art school. Alas, they fled to New York City and wasted their life with Graphic Design. Though extremely successful in designing pretty packaging for evil Pharma, they longed for greater purpose and began diving into personal projects at a later age.

Since childhood, they had always enjoyed creating comics and cartoons, combining Lucio’s artistic drawing talent with Nereo’s critically creative mind. They decided to waste some more time sticking it to the man with political and satirical projects – but this time having some fun.

Driven by the disastrous changes in world politics in the last two decades, the Zago Brothers produced a series of political cartoons reflecting the insanity and hypocrisy of our times.

In 2017, they published their first graphic novel, Williamsburg Shorts, and Lucio produced his first animated film, “Last Stop,” in 2023.

Life is short. Now they are finally ready to pick up where they left off when they were kids and thought it was all possible.
